CALL FOR PAPER for 2017 CONFERENCE
The radical change in the Philippine educational system occasioned by
the K-12 program and the incoming implementation of the new CHED General
Education Curriculum for college students this coming 2018 both signify
the fact that we currently live in interesting and challenging times.
As philosophers committed to the life of truthful reflection, the signs
of the times confront us with the imperative to find ways by which human
beings can still authentically dwell.
What role can philosophy still play in the age of technological machination and enframing? What action must philosophers do if they are to remain faithful to their call as pedagogues of society? What crucial role philosophy has to play in the changing landscape of liberal and humanities education? What critical engagement philosophers can offer amidst hegemonic and confusing discourses on heritage and history?
In an age where life has been devalued by the innocent deaths of thousands through poverty, the perpetual indifference of the privileged class, the commodity fetishism of mediocre social media, the existential insecurity brought about by the lack of stable and decent jobs, the loss of homes due to environmental catastrophe, the senseless loss of life occasioned by extra-judicial killings in the uncertain “war against drugs” and the threat of ethnocentric and religious fundamentalist violence in the Philippine South, all point to the necessity of a deeper questioning of the seemingly complacent current Philippine state of affairs.
In the context of the profound need to understand the relation between philosophical thinking, education and the sciences of man, we are inviting everyone from all disciplines to share in the common search for enlightenment in these apocalyptic times by submitting scholarly papers for our National Conference to be held at Baguio City this coming April 2017 with the theme “Philosophy, Pedagogy and Liberal Arts.” Set against the Philippine setting, topics that may be considered are the following:
• Liberal Arts and Human Emancipation
• The Death of Universities/the Death of Thinking
• Secular vs. Religious Education
• The Transformation of Philosophical Thought and Activity vis-à-vis Capitalism
• Social Media Technologies and Education
• Pedagogy and Social Movements
• The Production of Knowledge and Becoming Happy Slaves
• Critical heritage/historical discourses studies
• Indigeneity, Politics of Heritage and Education
Others topics are also welcome as long as they relate and integrate with the main theme given above. Aside from the national conference, there is going to be a workshop on teaching philosophy to basic education.
Paper Proposal Requirements
Paper proposals submitted for consideration by the Abstract Selection Committee must zero in on the theme and sub-themes. Only abstracts of between 200-250 words are accepted for presentation at the 2017 Philosophy Conference.
